Their mission is to connect the community through diverse, dynamic and creative experiences that bring people together to see, make and talk about contemporary visual art. For nearly 70 years they have been a pillar in the Houston community evolving past traditional art leagues. At this organization, you can visit their public gallery which showcases exquisite work or you can choose to participate in one of their many art classes. The Art League of Houston has implemented a variety of programs designed to assist with education and health. They have a presence in six Title 1 schools in the Houston Independent School District where they place an artist in residence to teach an 8-10 week course on site to supplement the lack of art programs in the schools. At the end of the course, they have an exhibition showcasing the students' art. It provides a creative and educational outlet for children who would otherwise not have access to art in school.

Another pillar of their contribution to the community is their Healing Art program. They offer free art classes to adults living with HIV+/AIDS as well as other severe illnesses including cancer, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia and physical disabilities. Healing Art started in 1990 and has grown immensely. It’s the only program of its kind outside of clinical or hospital settings allowing the artists to exhibit and sell artwork.
